Walk the Line: Shanklin to Ventnor

As part of the Isle of Wight Walking Festival we're offering the opportunity to walk the Island's disused railways. Our October walk follow the old line from Shanklin to Ventnor which closed on 17 April 1966.

This was once part of the Island's 'main line' with services running from Ryde Pier Head to Ventnor. Discover the site of Wroxall station, and look for the portals and ventilation shafts from the lengthy tunnel under St Boniface Down. We end at the site of Ventnor station, situated high above the town, and surrounded by an amphitheatre of cliffs. During the walk we'll look for clues of the railway's existence with knowledgeable railway experts.

Start: Meet at the Shanklin station at 10:30. Regular Southern Vectis buses run between Ventnor and Shanklin. We'd recommend either driving or taking the bus to Shanklin and using the bus to travel back to start of the walk.

Finish: Ventnor around 14:30.

Distance: 5½ miles. The walk is in two distinct sections. For the first 3 miles we'll follow the line of the disused railway as far as Wroxall, after which we climb over St Boniface Down, the highest point on the Island, to reach Ventnor. To enjoy this walk you'll need to be comfortable walking steeply up and downhill. Please bring your own lunch, sturdy footwear, and be prepared for all weathers!

Cost: £5 donation
