100 years of Calbourne
One of a class of 60 O2 Class locomotive, W24 Calbourne was built in 1891 as LSWR No 209 for use powering commuter services into London’s Waterloo station. Following the decision to amalgamate a large proportion of railways in the UK into four groups in 1923, Calbourne came into the ownership of the Southern Railway. The Isle of Wight fell within the Southern Railway area.
Calbourne first arrived on the Isle of Wight on 26 April 1925 as part of a plan to undertake a significant modernisation of the Island’s railway network and renumbered into the Isle of Wight series as No. W24. She was named Calbourne in June 1930. Not only does Calbourne hold an iconic status within the history of the Isle of Wight Steam Railway, but is also significant to the wider railway community as she is the only surviving example of an LSWR O2 Class locomotive.
O2 class locomotives were found to suit the railways on the Isle of Wight, and a total of 23 were transferred to the Island between May 1923 and April 1949. In late 1960, they became the only class of steam locomotives operating on the Isle of Wight, cementing their key role within the history of railways on the Island.
Following nationalisation of the transport industry in 1948, the railways on the Isle of Wight became part of the Southern Region of British Railways, so Calbourne transferred into the ownership of the new nationalised railway. Following British Railways’ analysis of the state of railways across the UK, a number of financially unviable railway lines began to be closed, including four lines on the Isle of Wight in the 1950s. The Beeching report, authored by Dr Richard Beeching, chairman of the British Railways Board, was published in March 1963, leading to another round of wide-sweeping closures of railways across the UK.
These cuts had a significant effect on the Isle of Wight, as all remaining lines except for that linking Ryde Pier Head to the tourism towns of Sandown and Shanklin were closed during the early months of 1966. This ushered in the end of the steam era on the Isle of Wight, as the last remaining line was electrified in early 1967.
Calbourne was kept by British Railways to pull engineers works trains at Ryde. Running in parallel to the end of steam-powered trains on the Isle of Wight, a group of individuals decided to try and save some of the Island’s steam heritage by seeking to purchase an O2 locomotive. They formed the Wight Locomotive Society and were successful in purchasing Calbourne thanks to a generous donation from wildlife artist David Shepherd.
At the time, Calbourne was stranded at Ryde, and needed to be transported by road to the abandoned station at Newport, where the Wight Locomotive Society was based, in 1969. Having been asked to vacate Newport station, Calbourne pulled the last train to leave Newport station on 24 January 1971 to her new home at Havenstreet. When the Wight Locomotive Society started operating a passenger service in Easter 1971 between Havenstreet and Woodhouse Crossing on the line towards Wootton, Calbourne was the locomotive pulling the carriages.
Calbourne was used extensively on the line, before the arrival of other locomotives joined the collection to share the workload. The arrival of extra motive power also allowed Calbourne to be periodically withdrawn from service to undertake necessary maintenance. The further addition of other working locomotives since has meant that, more recently, the Isle of Wight Steam Railway has been able to limit her use in order to protect and preserve our flagship locomotive.
Currently presented in the malachite green livery of Southern Railway, Calbourne returned to steam in August 2024 following the fitting of new tyres.
