Benefits of volunteering

Many of our volunteering roles involve meeting our visitors. There’s great satisfaction in welcoming people to the Railway, sharing their enthusiasm, and helping them get the most from their day.

Behind the scenes other volunteers are involved with the restoration of our locomotives and carriages, or looking after our track and stations. Some volunteers enjoy putting their experience to good use, whilst others love learning new skills that may be completely different to their regular day job.

We promise all our volunteers…

  • A warm welcome to the Isle of Wight Steam Railway team
  • A full induction and ongoing training
  • Fair and respectful treatment, and recognition of your contribution
  • You will be fully insured whilst you volunteer with us
  • We will cover the cost of essential items such as protective clothing and medical checks for those in safety critical roles.
  • References if you wish to use your volunteering to enhance your CV or apply for further education

After you have completed your initial training and volunteered at the Railway you’ll also be given an ‘Active Volunteer Card’ which gives you:

  • Unlimited free travel on the Isle of Wight Steam Railway
  • Discount of up to 50% on food and drink in our refreshment room, plus free tea and coffee whenever you are volunteering
  • 10% discount in the Railway shop
  • Generous discounts with Hovertravel
  • Subsidised social events and excursions
  • Volunteers from the mainland can also stay overnight for free in our well-appointed volunteer hostel
