Railway 200

RAILWAY 200

Railway 200 will be a year-long nationwide partnership-led campaign to celebrate 200 years of the modern railway and inspire a new generation of young pioneering talent to choose a career in rail.  It invites community, rail and other groups to get involved.

According to the Railway 200 website, “Railway 200 will be a year-long nationwide partnership-led campaign to celebrate 200 years of the modern railway and inspire a new generation of young pioneering talent to choose a career in rail.  It invites community, rail and other groups to get involved.” (Railway 200).

The Railway 200 website includes a map feature (Get involved – Railway 200), where organisations across the UK can add in any events/displays/activities they are holding to celebrate the 200th anniversary.

The Railway 200 website also included a branding toolkit, which should be used for any promotion/marketing of Railway 200-related events/activities (Railway 200 toolkit – Railway 200).

BACKGROUND TO RAILWAY 200

On 27th September 1825, the Stockton and Darlington Railway opened in County Durham in northern England. This was the first public railway using steam-powered locomotives to pull trains carrying goods and passengers. This line linked collieries (coal mines) near Shildon with the larger towns of Stockton and Darlington.

This line is considered to be the start of modern railways. The breakthrough of the opening of the Stockton and Darlington Railway inspired greater interest in the opportunities and benefits associated with railway transport, which led to new railways being created across the UK and around the world.

Shildon is where Locomotion can be found, which is part of the Science Museum Group like the National Railway Museum. It is so named because Locomotion was the name of the locomotive which pulled the first train on the Stockton and Darlington Railway on its opening day in 1825.  The Isle of Wight Steam Railway’s Hunslet Austerity locomotive, Juno, is on display at Locomotion.
